You can have SQL databases on both Windows and Linux/UNIX operating systems.

Runs only on Windows OS.
MySQL
Runs on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux/UNIX operating systems.
MS Access (recommended only for small websites)
Runs only on Windows OS.
